11 Brutally Honest Out-of-Office Messages for People Who Have Stopped Pretending

Auto-replies for the modern worker, who is technically on holiday, will absolutely check email by the pool, and was replaced by Tuesday.

The standard out-of-office message is a lie. “I will have limited access to email.” You will have full access to email. You will check it in an airport toilet while your family boards without you. Let us retire the fiction.

1. The Honest Classic

“I am on annual leave until Monday. I will read your email on Monday at 9:02am, feel my lifespan shorten, and pretend I didn’t see it until Tuesday.”

2. The Accurate Prediction

“I am out of the office. If this is urgent, it isn’t. In fifty years, nobody will know either of our names.”

3. The Delegation

“In my absence, please contact Rachel. Rachel has not been told. Rachel is also quietly interviewing for my job.”

4. The Long Haul

“I am on parental leave. I now report to a very small manager who screams at 3am and has never once said thank you. Honestly, it feels like home.”

“I am currently out of office. Emotionally, I left in 2021. Payroll hasn’t noticed.”

5. The Statistician

“There are 340 emails waiting for me. Yours is now 341. I will die with roughly 2,000 unread. Yours will be one of them.”

6. The Philosopher

“If an email is sent and nobody reads it, it was still more meaningful than our quarterly strategy.”

7. The One for Recruiters

“I’m away. If you are a recruiter, I’m interested.”

8. The Threat

“Any email marked ‘high importance’ will be read last, on principle. Nothing with a red exclamation mark ever mattered.”

9. The Sick Day

“I am unwell. My manager has already replied ‘hope you feel better!’ and, in the same sentence, asked about the deck. HR calls this ‘care’.”

10. The Realist

“I am on holiday, but my manager has my phone number, so in practice I am doing the same job in worse lighting with sand in it.”

11. The Final Form

“I have left the company. This auto-reply will outlive my career, my pension and, statistically, me.”
