Will AI Replace Me? An FAQ for Developers Who Should Be Nervous

An honest guide to the robots, from a columnist whose own replacement is being trained on this sentence.

Every developer has asked this question at 2am, staring at an AI tool that just wrote in eight seconds what took them three days. The tool did not need coffee. It did not need a chair. It did not need you. Let us address your fears. Honestly. You will not enjoy it.

Will AI replace developers?

Yes. Not all at once. One headcount at a time, in a meeting you are not invited to, under the heading “efficiencies”. The client still doesn’t know what they want. They have simply found something cheaper to not understand them.

But it writes bugs.

So do you. The difference is it writes them for a fraction of your salary and never asks about the pension. Speed was never the problem. Cost was. You were the cost.

AI can write the code. It just can’t sit through the meeting. Neither can you, and you cost more.

Can AI handle client meetings?

The client says, “Make it pop, but keep it subtle.” The AI produces four confident answers. You produce a sigh. For years the client chose the sigh. Then finance saw the invoice for the sigh.

Will my manager replace me with AI?

Your manager cannot share their screen. That is why they won’t do it personally. A consultant will. The consultant’s slide has your job in a red box labelled “low-hanging fruit”.

What about the junior developers?

There are no junior developers. There is a hiring freeze shaped exactly like them. The seniors now review AI code all day, like lifeguards at a pool full of confident mannequins.

Should I learn to prompt?

You already know how. You spent years explaining things in great detail to something that never quite understood you. It was called a project manager. The project manager is also being replaced. Small mercies.

Is there anything AI will never do?

It will never say “works on my machine” with that quiet human confidence. It will also never sit at your desk. Your desk is becoming a hot-desk with a plant. The plant has a longer contract.

So am I safe?

Nobody is safe. For now, someone still has to be blamed when it breaks, and AI does not have a LinkedIn profile. That is your job now. Professional scapegoat. Salary under review.
