Support Ticket #4471: Why Does Everything Need an App Now, and Why Does It Hate Me

Status: open. Priority: low. Customer mood: has been asked to scan a QR code to see a menu.

Ticket opened by: Customer, age 44.

Subject: I just wanted to park my car.

Original Message

Hello. Today I tried to pay for parking. There was no machine. There was a sign with a QR code. The QR code took me to an app. The app needed an account. The account needed a password with a capital letter, a number, a symbol and, I believe, my mother’s maiden name and my soul.

By the time I’d verified my email, the parking had expired and so had a measurable portion of my life. I’d like to know who to speak to.

Hi there! 😊 Thanks for reaching out. Have you tried updating the app?

Customer Reply

I’ve had the app for eleven minutes. How does it already need an update? I’ve had the same coat since 2011.

Technology was supposed to make life easier. Instead, every simple task now has a terms and conditions page longer than my mortgage, and I’ll be paying both off until I’m dead.

Great question! To help us assist you, please enter the six-digit code we’ve just sent to your phone.

The code arrived. I went to type it. The app logged me out. A new code arrived. I now have four codes. I feel like I’m defusing a bomb designed by a company valued at nine billion.

Also: the restaurant last night wanted me to scan a code to see the menu, scan another to pay, then rate my experience out of five. I wanted chips. I miss paper menus. You could hold them. They never needed charging. They never sold my location to a mattress company.

We’re sorry to hear that! Have you considered our premium tier, which includes priority support?

My teenage son has just fixed all of it in nine seconds without looking up from his own phone. He said “you just press the thing.” He didn’t show me which thing. He sighed like a man explaining fire to a cave. In twenty years, he’ll be me. I won’t be there to see it, but I’ll know.

Anyway, it works. Close the ticket.

Status
