It begins, as all disasters do, with a single innocent act. Someone in Facilities sends “Fire drill moved to Thursday” to the All-Staff list. All 4,000 of us. Within ninety seconds, the ecosystem wakes.
Bring binoculars. Avoid eye contact. Here is what you’ll see.
The Early Responder
Replies “Thanks!” to everyone. Has never read the “To” field. Believes email is a private chat, the way a toddler believes the television can hear them. Harmless. The first domino. Will be named in the post-incident review, and nowhere else.
The Remove-Me Colony
Arrives in clusters of twelve. Each types “Please remove me from this list” and hits Reply All, joining the list they’re fleeing. Like moths. Moths with job titles and pensions they’ll never reach.
Nothing unites a company like 400 people asking to be left alone, publicly, at the same time. It’s the closest the place has come to a culture.
The Enforcer
Replies all, in capitals: “STOP REPLYING ALL.” Feels heroic. Is the fourteenth email. Signs off “Regards”, which is how you know they’d burn the building down if they could find the fire drill.
The Comedian
Sends a GIF. Always the same one. A man eating popcorn. He has eaten that popcorn since 2013. He has outlasted three CEOs. Legal will remember the GIF longer than the Comedian.
The Senior Vice President
Emerges late, from the canopy. Replies all: “Can we take this offline?” It is the first time the SVP has written to you. It will be the last. The next time your name crosses his desk, it’ll be on a spreadsheet with a column called “Impact”.
The IT Department
Rarely seen in the wild. Appears after message 212 to announce the list is “locked for maintenance”. Locks it. Then emails everyone on the list to explain the lock. IT is never fired. IT knows what you search for.
Conservation Status
Thriving. No known predator. Every attempt to wipe out reply-all has produced another email about it. By Friday the fire drill is forgotten. Nobody knows where to assemble. In a real fire, 4,000 people would stand in the car park, replying all.
