The Dishes Situation: It Was Never About the Pan

THE PROBLEM

My boyfriend and I moved in together four months ago. He's lovely, but he leaves dishes "to soak" for days. Not hours. Days. A pan has been soaking since Sunday and it's now Thursday. When I bring it up, he says I'm "nagging" and that he was going to do it. I don't want to be the person who argues about pans. But it's the pan. Am I being unreasonable?

ZACK'S RESPONSE

You’re not arguing about the pan. Nobody in history has argued about a pan. The pan is just the bit of the argument you can see from the kitchen.

What’s actually happened is you’ve moved in with a man who does not perceive washing up. He doesn’t see the pan. He has never seen a pan. To him, a pan soaking since Sunday is part of the decor, like a lamp, or you, quietly simmering next to it.

“I was going to do it” is the most confident sentence in the English language, and it has never once been true.

Four months in and you’ve already been promoted to Unpaid Head of Noticing. No salary. No title. Just a lifetime contract and a man who calls your job description “nagging”. At this rate, in thirty years you’ll be scraping a roasting tin while he tells the grandchildren he “does his share”.

Here’s the grain of sense: forget the pan. Have the dull conversation about who does what, write it down, and agree on what “done” means. A system, not a mood. Systems are much harder to call nagging, and much easier to point at.
