The following feedback was delivered over one working week, regarding one logo, on one homepage. The designer has asked us to share it as a warning. To whom, she didn’t say. Everyone, presumably.
Monday
Client: Looks great. Can we make the logo bigger?
Designer: Sure. How much bigger?
Client: Like, noticeably bigger. But not obviously.
Tuesday
Client: Better. Bigger again.
Designer: It’s now larger than the navigation.
Client: Good. People need to know whose website it is.
Designer: They typed your name into the browser.
Client: You can’t be too careful.
The logo is not too small. The logo is never too small. The client’s ego simply needs a bigger font than the rest of us.
Wednesday
Client: My wife says it should pop.
Designer: Pop how?
Client: You’re the designer.
Designer: Adds a drop shadow. Hears her design degree file for divorce.
Thursday
Client: Can it spin?
Designer: The logo?
Client: Slowly. Like it’s confident.
Designer: It’s a dental practice.
Client: Confident dentistry.
Friday
Client: I’ve shown it to the team, and honestly, the logo feels a bit big?
Designer: You asked for it bigger. Four times.
Client: Did I? Can we go back to Monday’s version?
Designer: Monday’s version is the original version.
Client: Perfect. Love it. Great work this week.
Designer: Sends invoice. Makes the total bigger. Noticeably. But not obviously.
The Following Monday
Client: Got the invoice. Quick thought.
Designer: Yes?
Client: Can the total be smaller?
Designer: How much smaller?
Client: Noticeably smaller. And paid in 120 days.
Designer: Closes laptop. Stares into the middle distance. Calculates that at this rate she retires at 91.
Editor’s Note
The logo is back to its original size. The website won a small regional award for “clarity of branding”. The client accepted it on stage, holding the trophy beside his face. The designer was not mentioned. The designer was also not paid until March. The trophy, she notes, was slightly too big.
